Booking your bridal hair and makeup trial is one of the most exciting parts of your wedding planning journey. It’s the day you get to see your bridal ideas start to come to life – and for many brides, it’s the first time they truly feel like a bride.
As a bridal hair and makeup artist based in Bristol, I work with brides all over the South West, including The Cotswolds, Bath, Devon and Wales, helping them find their perfect, natural, and long-lasting wedding look. If you’ve never had a bridal trial before, here’s exactly what to expect and how to make the most of it.
When to Book Your Bridal Hair and Makeup Trial
I usually recommend booking your trial around two to three months before your wedding day. This gives us plenty of time to perfect your look and make any adjustments if needed. You can, of course, opt to have a trial earlier or later. Most of us are pretty flexible!
If your wedding is during a busy summer season, booking earlier is always a good idea – it guarantees your preferred date and gives you one less thing to worry about!
What Happens During the Trial
Your bridal hair and makeup trial is a relaxed, collaborative appointment. It’s our chance to talk about your ideas, your dress, your wedding theme, and how you want to feel on your day.
We’ll start with a chat over a cup of tea (or coffee!) about your style. You might bring photos or inspiration from Pinterest, but don’t worry if you’re not sure what you want – that’s what I’m here for. Together, we’ll design a look that complements your features, your dress, and your personality.
I’ll then create your bridal makeup look, focusing on glowing skin, soft definition, and a natural finish that lasts all day. Once you’re happy with your makeup, we’ll move on to your bridal hairstyle – whether that’s a relaxed updo, soft waves, or something modern and boho. Please don’t worry if you aren’t sure by the end – I promise we’ll make any tweaks you need. It’s just makeup – it washes off and you won’t offend me.
You’ll leave the trial with a clear idea of how you’ll look and feel on your wedding day.
What to Bring to Your Trial
To make the most of your session, here are a few things I recommend bringing:
Photos of your dress, accessories, and general wedding style.
Hair accessories or veils you plan to wear.
Images of hair and makeup looks you like (even if you’re unsure – they help guide our conversation).
A top with a similar neckline to your dress, so you can visualise your final look.
Any skincare or makeup concerns you’d like to discuss, such as sensitivity, oiliness, or dryness.
If you have bridesmaids who want a similar style or colour palette, it’s worth discussing this too – I can help you coordinate your bridal party’s look.
After the Trial
Once we’ve finished, I’ll make detailed notes about the products used, colours, and techniques. I’ll also take photos (with your permission) so we can replicate everything perfectly on your wedding day.
You’ll also receive a wedding morning schedule a few weeks before the big day, outlining the order of hair and makeup on the day. This keeps things calm, organised, and stress-free – exactly how your morning should feel.
A Few Final Tips
Arrive with clean, dry hair and your makeup done how you usually wear it. This gives me a nice idea of the things that make you you
Avoid trying fake tan or new skincare right before your trial.
Feel free to take photos in different lighting so you can see how the makeup wears.
Be honest! This is your day, and your feedback helps me tailor the look exactly to your preferences.
Why the Trial Matters
Your bridal trial is more than just a beauty appointment – it’s a chance for us to connect. By the time your wedding morning arrives, you’ll already know exactly what to expect and can relax knowing everything is in safe hands.
Whether you’re planning a romantic Cotswold wedding, a city celebration in Bristol, or a destination wedding abroad, your trial ensures your bridal look feels completely you – natural, elegant, and timeless.
I would love to help with your bridal hair and makeup on your wedding day. If you think we’d be a good fit, I’d love to hear from you!
