Mothers of the brides don’t get as much praise as they should. They are elegant, always switched on, and want the absolute best for the brides, and a real positive for me is that they always seem to have a steady supply of snacks and tea.
I think it’s such a treat when mothers and soon-to-be mothers-in-law are given the opportunity to have their hair and makeup done on a wedding morning. Over the summer, I have done makeup on over 45 mother and mothers-in-laws and what I loved about them is that they have all wanted something different to what they usually do. They have been willing to step out of their comfort zones and allow me to create something I think will suit them.
Makeup application varies from person to person and a good makeup artist can tailor for all skin tones and textures.
Makeup should always start with good skin prep on any skin type or texture.
For this, I usually start with a cleanse. Currently, I am using this one from Evolve.
Next, I’ll admit I like to keep things simple regarding on-the-day skincare. Nothing I put on your skin is going to change it with one application drastically, so, I will always forgo any anti-wrinkle/retinol/or any other smoke and mirrors product that they try to sell to you. I will ensure that your skin is hydrated with a good hyaluronic acid, a hydrating eye cream, a hydrating moisturiser and factor 50 sunscreen (the one I use doesn’t cause flashback). I am also a really big fan of moisturising sprays and setting sprays. The Charlotte Tilbury setting spray is great for setting makeup, of course, but it’s also wonderful to add a little hydration before makeup application. I also love Caudalie Beauty Elixir and it smells great!
For mother of the bride foundation, I don’t believe there is a one foundation that fits all as it’s completely down to your personal preference. I do prefer foundations with a slight glow, but nothing that will make you look too shiny or sweaty. I am currently trying out the Charlotte Tilbury matte foundation with a Lisa Eldridge glow primer underneath.
I like to keep the eyes soft but defined. I love soft browns or greys to frame the eyes but nothing too harsh or any colours that could cause the eyes to look sunken. Work with colours that will compliment your skin tone and eye colour. Soft brown pencil eyeliners are really great for adding definition without being too overpowering. I love to blend these out with a blending brush or cotton bud to add softness.
I will always be a dewy skin kinda person but it’s important to powder in the areas where we might get sweaty. Think; top lip. under eyes, around the nose and top of the forehead.
I like to set everything into place with Charlotte Tilbury setting spray and add whatever preferred lipstick/balm you like. I still have a bit of a hatred for lipgloss (I grew up in the 90s) but I’m working on it 😉
