Pinterest can be great for gathering some ideas together for your wedding. However, creating your bridal Pinterest board can also be a bit of a minefield. Follow some of my tips to creating a suitable amount of images to help you on your way.
Makeup
It is so easy to go down a rabbit hole when it comes to picking images for your bridal Pinterest board. Here are some things to bear in mind:
- Try to look for images that have not been edited. I know this is sometimes hard to tell but if the skin looks literally flawless then it has been edited. Skin is skin, it has pores and lines. Try as we (I) might, our skin will always have those things.
- Make sure that you are looking at the makeup and not the model. I do this all of the time. Especially when I am looking at hairstyles. I pick images where I think that I like the makeup but in reality, I can’t even see the makeup, I simply see a beautiful looking person and wish I was her.
- Pick models with a similar skin tone. This isn’t always necessary but it really does help. There is a tendency to pick images of models who are blonde with fair skin, when you may have brown hair and olive skin. The colours or techniques may not actually suit your complexion. Of course, if you are hiring a professional makeup artist, they will be able to help with giving advice on this but it’s good to have a little look around first to see what ideas you like the look of.
- Aim to pick around 5 images that show what you are looking for. I am the worst for this. My Pinterest board has so many images on it. That’s actually my task after this, to cut it down. However, I have my board for inspiration for my brides. For your board, it’s a good idea to have between 3-5 images. Try to keep them all within the same theme or just one other theme. Again, it’s easy to add lots of images of beautiful people so think about what you like about the makeup before adding it in. This will make it much easier for your makeup artist when it comes to creating a look for you.
Hair
- A lot of the images on Pinterest are of blondes. There isn’t a problem with this when it comes to the styles that you like but bear in mind that blonde hair tends to have more tones to it and therefore the style stands out a lot more. This is something to be aware of when your artist creates a style for you. It may technically be a similar style but may not look the same due to the colour difference.
- Have a look in the mirror and see where you would like some detail. For me, my hair doesn’t look great in a low bun so I prefer styles that are higher up (in a ponytail) or half up. I need hair framing my face also. Look for styles that suit you and have similar placement on the model.
- Keep your dress in mind. It’s quite common to find a style that you love – say for instance, a low bun. However, your dress may have a high neckline with some buttons. This will make the hair get caught in the buttons and get a little flyaway. Opt for something higher up or half up/down.
- Check your hair length against the models. This can be a little tricker as it’s sometimes hard to tell. If the hair on the model is fairly thick, then they may be wearing extensions. If the bun (or the whatever detail at the back) is fairly big then the chances are, they have fairly long hair, think just past the shoulders or longer. This may not be an issue of you are thinking of getting extensions but if not, then some styles may be impossible to achieve.
- Again, opt for 3-5 images of your favourite styles to help your stylist at your trial.
I hope this all helps in creating your bridal Pinterest board. If you do get carried away (as I do), add the images in and then take them away at the end or another day.
